Full Version: Random Darren drabble
Secret-Spy-Guy
So, I was bored in school, and couldn't think of anything good to write, so I came up with this random little drabble where Darren goes to catch a fish. I think that it takes place a little before the Vampire's assistant, or somtehing like that. It's kind of odd, and really doesn't have a point...but...hehe. emo-blush.gif Hope you like it. Hopefully the next thing I write isn't so random.

The fish

The river seemed to giggle mockingly at me, spitting on my clothes, soaking the dark grey suit that hung limply around my thin frame. I stared hotly at the running water, mentally cursing it for being so cloudy
The sun bore down on my body, causing sweat to run over my face. I shed my heavy jacket, setting it on a dry part of the bank, before loosening my stiff shirt collar.
“Catch a fish.” He had said, the night before. “Catch a fish, Darren, and I shall help you to cook it.”
Mr. Crepsly spoke as if I were simply thinking or moving my fingers. I had never been very good at fishing. Sometimes I had tried to on family outings, but it usually ended in defeat, even with the help of fancy rods, flies, and lures. To catch this fish, I was to use only my bare hands, something that no sane human being would ever attempt.
Well…I wasn’t really human anymore...and, because I did attempt it, that must also mean that I was very sane either.
I began my silent vigil, watching the swirling current drag along leaves, twigs, and small pieces of dirt past my vision. Sitting there, I remembered how boring I thought fishing alone was. It was fun when my family was there, giving their own comments on what they saw.
“That twig looks like a snake, Darren.” My dad would say, pointing at a normal looking stick floating on the water’s surface. “Don’t touch it. It might be deadly poisonous.”
“There aren’t water snakes here.” My mother would say. “Stop scaring the kids, Dermot.”
“There are too snakes here.” Annie would say in her all knowing voice.
I knew she would be right.
Staring at that water, I felt very homesick. It was a strange feeling. I hadn’t thought about them in weeks. At first, everything I had seen had reminded me of them. Leaves…grass...rocks…it’s ridiculous when I say it now, but then it was true. I could have looked at one of those ink splotches that psychiatrists have, and picked out every one of their faces in it.
Things hadn’t been like that for a while. That was probably because Mr. Crepsly kept me on the move. It’s hard to think about things when you’re stalking through the woods, helping to bring in a catch.
My eyes caught something moving beneath the water. It was a shining silver fin…from a fish! I tensed my body in preparation, studying the creature’s movements before I attacked. My hand sliced through the water, turning down in a scoop shape, ready to seize my prey. I felt the creature’s smooth scaly underbelly and reached down with my other hand, gripping onto its pulsing sides. I could feel a barbed fin slip into my hand, and was thankful that cold water had numbed my skin. My hard, thick nails dug into its flesh as I tried to get its flailing body under control.
At this moment, I was perched precariously on the bank, my bare feet gripping the slick stones of the shore.
I smiled slightly as I felt a lull in the animal’s struggles, and I shifted my weight to bring in my catch. It was during that brief period when the fish lashed out, nearly squirming from my grasp. The action took me by surprise, and my body twitched slightly, pushing myself off balance. My feet slid along the rocks, and before I knew it, I was plunging into the water scrambling to hold on to my prize.
There is nothing that can rival a creature in its natural habitat. Even with my increased strength, I discovered that I was horribly out of place in the fish’s domain. I caught fleeting glances of my prey as we became intertwined with each other in a fight for life. I had to get the creature onto the bank. There, the tables would be turned, and I would be able to take my prize back to Mr. Crepsly, and prove to him I wasn’t a weakling.
“Catch a fish.” His voice echoed in my head. “Catch a fish Darren.”
I dug my nails deep into the fish’s sides, allowing myself a small smile of satisfaction as the scales gave way beneath my hold. Firmly grasping my catch, I planted my feet on the, muddy riverbed, and shot up through the water, dragging the hapless fish with me. I flung the creature up on the bank, praying that it wouldn’t manage to flop back into the running water, and away from me.
I clutched to at the slippery stones of the bank, trying to find a hold so I could escape the freezing cold. It was biting at me now, as if it were an actual animal, toying with its prey. I was thankful that I wasn’t wearing shoes. They would have simply filled up with water and mud, bogging me down terribly.
Finally I found a clump of roots, and after trying to push against the current for so long, I hoisted myself onto firm ground…onto my element.
The wind nipped at my body, freezing my soaked clothing. In an attempt to stay warm, I reached for my jacket, and pulled it around my shoulders, thankful that I had the sense to remove it before chancing the icy depths. Then I turned to the fish flailing around on the grass, its gills moving in erratic motions as it desperately tried to catch a breath that was gone to it.
The creature was suffocating.
“Well, of course you have to kill the fish, Darren.” My dad’s voice echoed in my head. “Here, let me show you.”
I could almost hear the sick snapping sound of the animal’s spine echo through the clearing.
“I don’t even like fish.” My voice protested in my mind. “It didn’t do anything to us.”
“That’s fishing, Darren.”
“I hate it.”
I stared at my opponent, slowly crawling over to it as its struggles died down. Its jaws moved up and down as it attempted to suck in our air…air that it wasn’t made for. I felt a wave of pity for it.
“Maybe the fish has a family that it needs to go back to.”
My sister’s voice rung true in my mind. I knew that fishes didn’t have close ties to their families, but still…I didn’t want to kill it. I knew, even then, that there was a lot of killing in my future. Why make it come any sooner.
I took the fish in my hands, and gently threw it back into the water. It hit with a small splash, and was gone…
“I don’t even like fish.” I murmured to myself, collecting my shoes, and getting to my feet.
Mr. Crepsly was going to think I was weak…but I really didn’t care then. I was myself…and that was all that mattered.

Lol, I really enjoyed that story, nice job! ^^ It's written really well! =D
I think you're right, it might be immediately before the second Book, or kinda. Darren has still so much to learn about vampires lifestyle... ^^ It's surprising thinking how much his way to think and behaviour will change during the whole story!

biggrin.gif I was thinking of making a Darren and Creplsy drabble, and an Evra one too, but another idea I had was what might have happened if the second part of the last story never occured and everything went on as it would have. I was thinking of telling the story from Darius' point of view and how he tried to overcome his past, and make a future for himself. I already have the first chapter finished, but wether I continue, is still up in the air. biggrin.gif I have so many other fan fictions in the works right now. biggrin.gif Life is crazy
Ms Debbie
cool story i want more happy.gif keep it up
