Turning Tables-Chapter 1

“One Day More…………….”

“Okay who can give me the answer to Number two?” Mrs. Craig asked the bored looking class of 14 year olds. A few kids had there hands up.

One of them was Audrey Jhonson, and another Amy Kyes.

“Yes Audrey, your answer?” Mrs. Craig asked the girl.

“The answer is Madam Octa.” The blonde haired girl sanswered. She had blue eyes, a body that was neither fat nor skinny.

“Good job Audrey! Okay, Number 3?”

Audrey figured since she answered, she wouldn’t have to answer any more questions for awhile, so she stared out the window of her English class. She already knew the book front to back, Cirque du Freak 1:A living Nightmare.

She loved the books so much! The Saga of Darren Shan was her second favorite books! Her favorite was Phantom by Susan Kay, she was a really big phantom of the opera phanatic.

Anyways, she looked out the window and imagined what she would be like as a vampire, searching for people’s to feed off of there blood. She giggled at the thought.

Then a note was set on her desk, she looked at it and it was from her best friend Amy Kyes.

Amy had short blonde and brown hair, and way skinny and graceful because she was a ballerina.

The note said, “I love this book! Remember when you thought they were stupid?”

And Audrey did, she used to hate the books, but then started them up again and fell in love with them. And Amy was the one who got her hooked on the books.

The bell rang which woke Audrey up from her thoughts, and she went to meet Amy outside the class.

Turning Tables-Chapter 2

“Can you believe that Aaron got suspended? Again?” Amy Kyes, her best friend said as they walked down the hall.

“Yes, actually I can. I mean, he was caught smoking twice in 6th grade, and was at least suspended 3 time the rest of junior high.” Audrey said while closing her locker. She put away her English book, and got out her pre-algebra book.

“Still in pre-algebra? We took that last year!”

Amy never could stop reminding Audrey how she had to pre-algebra again. They took it last year, because they were not smart enough for algebra, but were not dumb enough for basic math. Unfortunately, Audrey did not get the class, though she did not fail it. Amy, on the other hand was promoted to geometry.

“Yeah, well at least I’m not a math geek!” Audrey said in return.

“True……” Amy replied, the both laughed and walked on.

“What’s your view on the end of the cirque Du freak?” Amy asked.

Audrey shrugged, “What’s yours?”

“I think it’s real! I mean think about it! Wouldn’t that cool?” Amy said excitedly.

“Oh yeah, then there would be a nuclear war and we would all die! Oh, but wait! We would come back as gray skinned Frankenstein people!” Audrey said sarcastically.

“Well, it would be cool! To be a vampire or vampaneeze……..”

“Hold on, a vampaneeze?” Audrey asked, “Don’t they kill when they feed?”

“Yes, but they think its right, and it’s not that bad, and they have cool purple skin!” Amy replied

“They do have cool skin…………” Audrey replied.

“Well, is it true you think?” Amy thought.

Audrey thought before turning into her classroom, “yes, and no. Maybe there is some truth, but it’s not all true.”

“I can respect that. Hey absoquolete five!” Amy called, absoquolete meant high, and Audrey had found it in a book, telling about lemony Snicket.

“Absoquolete!” Audrey called, and turned into her classroom.

Turning Tables - Chapter 3

At the end of the day Audrey and Amy got on there bus to go home.

But as they got on, Audrey was thinking about amy’s words, and they were troubling her.

“Hey amy, you know how you were talking about if Cirque du freak was real?” Audrey asked.

“Yeah, why?” Amy replied.

“wouldn’t it be cool ,hypothetically, if we were the ones who were chosen to be the next in line as the new darren and steve?” Audrey said, referring to the twelfth book.

“Hmmmmmmm, well I think it would be pretty cool!” Amy said.

They both sat there for a second, waiting or the silence to be broken.

“I call being the not evil one!” Audrey called out.

Amy just glanced at her and said, “lets face it, if that were to happen, I probably would be on the evil side……….”

“yeah……….” Audrey said joking, and so was amy.

“Hey maybe tonight we can go to the mall!” Amy said.

“Well, I guess, if my parents let me. We do have to study for that play we are doing, I haven’t even started memorizing. Oh, what the heck, sure!” Audrey said.

“I just wish they had a book store!” Amy said mad.

“I know, sometimes the only reason I go to a mall is because of the book store. But we have to live in a town where there are no bookstores.” Audrey replied.

“At least we have a great library!” Amy said.

It was true, though there library didn’t have great books, they had a system where you get other books from other libraies, and the other libraies.

Audrey and May were great readers, but everyone thought that was strange because, who reads for fun? They thought. They just loved to lose themselves in books, it only took them s short time to read books. Books were like life to them. If you wanted to know a good book to read, they could tell you.

“hey! Here is my stop! See You tomorrow amy!” Audrey called.

“Bye!” Amy said, as Audrey ran to her house.

Turning Tables - Chapter 4

“MOM! I’M HOME!!!!!” Audrey yelled as she came into the house. She stopped to smell the sweet scent of her house which smelled like flowers her mother had just put on the table.

“Audrey your home! How was your day?” Her mother, Cindy, answered.

“Eh, is Iris home? Oh, and the flowers smell great!” Audrey asked. Iris was her little sister she was 11 and in 5th grade, not held back just had a December birthday.

“Wait, what do you mean by Eh?” Her mother asked.

“Well………...I had to run the stupid laps in gym today. They think we like this stuff! Or they just want to torture us.” Audrey said. “Oh yeah, can I go to the mall with Amy tonight?”

“Sure.” Cindy answered.

“Thank! I’m gonna go get iris, and I love the flowers!“

“I put a rose in your room, since I know how you like them.“

“Thanks again! IRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Audrey called up the stairs.

“What?” Her sister came out of her room. She had long brown curly hair and glasses. Also tall for her age, she was almost as tall as Audrey!

“Want to watch an Avatar Episode? Please?” Audrey asked.

“OK!” Iris answered as she came down the stairs. It might be strange but they were friends even though they were sisters. They never fought, and were truly each others best friend. They also shared interests that were the same. Like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Danny Phantom, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and of course Cirque Du Freak! She was only on the 6th book though.

“Let’s watch the cave of two lovers! Because it’s a musical and I love the plot. It’s so beautiful, two lovers loved each other even though there tribes were feuding, they might have been from different worlds! But then, while meeting, the man dies and the woman almost kills everyone, but decides to use his death to bring everyone together.” Audrey said.

“Yeah, we can watch that, but that’s really deep for a cartoon.” iris said.

“Shut up!” Audrey said jokingly, as she sat and watched the show with her sister.

Turning Tables - Chapter 5

Later that Day, it was time for Audrey to go meet Amy at the mall. Her dad got home and he took her and they picked up Amy on the way. Her dad’s real name was J. Just the letter J.

“So are you going to see a movie?” J asked.

“Probably, but we have to see what’s playing first.” Audrey replied.

“I hope they have a scary movie playing, those are fun!” Amy said.

“YEAH THEY ARE!!!!!!!!!!” Audrey replied. They loved scary movies. They weren’t scary to them; they laughed and screamed at the same time throughout the whole movie.

“Here you guys go, I’ll be back to pick you up at 9:30.” Her dad said.

“OK thanks!” Audrey said.

“Yeah, and thanks for the ride!” Amy called, as Audrey’s dad left.

“So, what do you want to do?” Amy asked.

“Let’s go to claries, I love how it’s turning Goth now!” Audrey said.

“Me too!”

They walked toward the shop and looked around; Audrey glanced at her watch and saw it was 7:30.

“Hey, let’s go see what movies are playing.” Audrey asked Amy.

“Yeah, lets!” Amy replied.

“Let’s go around the mall, its faster that way.” Amy said.

“Okay!” Audrey said, “Let me put on my jacket.”

Audrey put her Phantom of the Opera, “phantom Phanatic” zip up sweatshirt on, and Amy put on her yellow zip up sweatshirt. They walked out the doors, and silently along the mall. The cool air nipped at their skin, they were suddenly wishing they had thicker jackets. A train whistled as it speed not to far away. Their were train track all around their town.

They turned the mall a corner and were about to go into the other side , when Audrey saw a lone light in the distance.

“Hey, whats that?” Audrey said.

Amy turned her head, and saw the light. It was a small fire lamp, used when electricity wasn’t invented.

“What do you think it is?” Amy asked.

“I don’t know.” Audrey said. Straining her eyes to see it.

“Do you think we should check it out?” Amy asked, a tweak of adventure in her eyes.

Audrey was hesitant about it, what if it was some physco guy wanting to kill them or worse. I mean, they were only 14, well Amy was 15, but that was because of her Spetember birthday. “Do you think it could be a bad person?” Audrey asked.

“Why would they be right here?” Amy asked.

“Because they wouldn’t be seen, this is the back of the mall.”

“Well, if you don’t want to……………”

“I guess its ok, we can go see.” Audrey said. Her adventurous side coming out.

“Lets go!” Amy called and headed towards the fire.

Turning Tables - Chapter 6

The night was black as despair, as if a sense of dread was hanging over them. It was so strong, Audrey could tell. But, she really wanted to do investigate, to prove that she wasn’t scared, and because half of her really wanted to do this.

As they approached the fire, they could make out trailers, tents, and caravans. Also some sleeping bags. And a train, which read “Cirque Du Freak” along the side with letters that, looked like they were written in Blood.

“Oh My God.” was all that Amy could muster out. They stared dumbfounded at the sight of the people moving around, they looked normal.

Without talking, Audrey pointed to a big oak tree that was close to were the tents stared. Both of the girls ran towards it, feeling cold sweat down there backs. Audrey was really wishing she had worn something heavier.

The oak tree could hide both of them. Audrey peeked around to see many normal people walking around; well she thought they were normal! The whole train and circus scene reminded her off Freakshow’s circus and train from Danny Phantom. It looked like it too. She turned her back to the oak, and leaned against it, breathing fast and softly. In a stage whisper she asked Amy “Is this what I think……….”

“Yes.” Amy answered, equally quiet, maybe quieter.

“But, how……….?!” Audrey questioned.

“I have no idea.” Amy replied. “But, maybe, they are here…”

“Did you girls lose something?” A Deep low voice asked from behind them. They both turned slowly around to see the tallest man in the world.

Amy opened her mouth to say something, but all that came out was a squeak. Audrey stared dumbfounded, I bet I look like a complete idiot. Audrey thought. It was Mr. Tall the head of the Cirque Du Freak. He wore a red ringmaster’s outfit, with black pants and black gloves and top hat. He even dresses like Freakshow, Audrey thought again.

“You do not look like a complete idiot, and who is this, Freakshow?” Mr. Tall asked.

Audrey suddenly remembered his physic powers, and shook herself out of her stare. “Um, hi. My name is Audrey, and no we didn’t lose anything.” Audrey thought about shaking his hand, but remembered he didn’t like it. “And, um, we were admiring you’re great circus.”

“And Amy and you would tickets, hmmm?” Mr. Tall asked.

“How long is the show and when does it start?” Amy asked, Audrey forgot she was even there.

“We have 2 shows, one that starts at 9:00pm, then lasts till 11:30pm. And another one at 1:00am to 3:30am. But I can tell that you girls are interested in the 9:00 one.”

Before, Audrey could answer, Mr. Tall had two tickets in his hand, outstretched to her. She paused for a moment then snatched one ticket, leaving Amy to decided if she wanted one. She snatched it up quickly too.

“I’ll see you tonight.” Mr. Tall said.

“Wait!” Audrey called, but seeing that he wasn’t going anywhere, she cleared her throat. “I just wanted you to know, that um, it’s been an honor meeting you.”
“Same to you. Now I have to go get ready for the show. If you want, I can show you backstage after the show.” He said.

“That would be great.” Amy said.

“Goodbye.” Mr. Tall said, then disappeared as if into air.

The girls stared at each other, unsure of what just happened.

“Did we just……” Amy started.

“I Think…………” Audrey answered back.

Then Audrey pulled out her cell phone and called her dad, “Dad, the movie Thirsty lasts 2 and a half hours and starts at 9:30, so can u pick us up at 12:00?”
firegal6
Turning Tables - Chapter 7

It took a lot of begging, but Audrey and Amy finally talked there parents into letting them stay later than they had planned. They said it was because the movie was late. When asked why they had not seen an earlier one, they said it had already started when they were there. They just prayed there lucky stars that there actually was one that lasted that long. It was some drama about two lovers. Lame, Audrey couldn’t believe her parents even thought they would see it!

Before they saw the show, Amy had to use the bathroom. Audrey waited outside the bathroom, almost shaking with excitement. She kept flipping the ticket over in her hand. It was all green, except for one side, which said CURQUE DU FREAK in blood red letters that popped out a little. Probably so it could not be copied, but who knew.

Still as Audrey was excited as she was, she could tell something was wrong. She thought of Darren and how it changed his life. How it changed it for the worse. She wondered if this was somehow about her, but that was silly. There were probably more people than she could count there. But the feeling……..

“Are you ready to go? Or are you gonna stare at your ticket all day?” Amy asked.

Audrey was startled; see must have been too deep in thought.

“I’m ready if you are!” Audrey answered.

They walked out the mall, to the back. Audrey pulled her hood up over her blonde hair. It was starting to get windy and cold. They were quiet the whole way. Audrey wondered of Amy was feeling anything. She usually was talkative, as she was, but Amy hadn’t said a word.

“Amy?” Audrey asked.

“yeah?” Amy answered back.

“Do you, ya know, feel like something is going to go wrong?”

“A little bit, do you think we shouldn’t go?”

Audrey looked up at the sky, instead of Darren she did not feel like she could put the blame on someone else, as he did.

“NO, lets go ahead.” Audrey said and tried to put on a brave smile.

They walked along the grass, it was bumpy. The wind picked up and kept pulling her hood down. She finally gave in, but frustrated. They saw the fire and walked towards it.

Its seemed different when they were closer. You could smell the fire, for one, and well, there was a different kind of atmosphere. You could tell there was tension from the people around.

They saw a black tent, it was so camouflaged you would have missed it if you didn’t know where to look for it. Audrey thought maybe it was some magic, like the kind that hid Evanna’s house.

They walked inside and looked at there tickets. They were near the front, so they walked silently to the first row.

“Are you ready?” Amy asked Audrey?

“Yes.” Audrey answered.

Then a loud sound of trumpets blared from somewhere offstage. It was really loud! The trumpets in there band were never this loud! Her Oboe would explode if it were this loud!

Suddenly as they began, they stopped. And Mr. Tall walked onstage.
firegal6
Turning Tables - Chapter 8

Mr. Tall stepped on stage with his black top hat and black gloves, nothing like the books. In the books it was red. But I guess they had to change some things, so they couldn’t recognize people.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Cirque Du Freak.” Mr. Tall called out. His voice was deep and filled up the whole tent. He didn’t even have a microphone. Audrey never felt so scared, or so excited in her life! “The acts that are about to take place are all real, at the Cirque, we try our best to give you a taste of the spectacular!”

Audrey and amy looked at each other, and had a scared look in there eyes.

Mr. Tall went on with show. And just as in the first book of cirque du freak went. It was almost identical! Audrey recalled the last book, darren saying someone, even a girl, could replace him. Audrey felt the sinking feeling in her gut. And she looked over at Amy, and she looked sick too. But who were they to worry? There were probably about other kids there age. Yes, Audrey thought, other kids…………

During one of the intermissions. Amy and Audrey went to the souveniours. “Audrey! Look!” Amy whispered, though there was no need to. There were tons of people talking. But Audrey looked, and she saw a little person. She was dumbfounded. She wanted to speak, but couldn’t.

“Should we talk to it?” Audrey finally spit out.

“I have no idea whatsoever.” Amy said.

“Arggh! I wish we could give it something that could help it out! What if its someone we know?” Audrey replied.

“tTue……………” amy said. Then she got an idea! “Audrey! You have two of the sixith cirque du freak book, right?”

“Oh no, your not gonna make me give up one of my books! I LOVE MY BOOKS!” Audrey said a little more loudly than she meant to.

“Shhhhhh! I promise, I’ll get you another one for birthday, or Christmas, or whatever!” amy yelled.

“What if it already has one!” Audrey replied.

“Yeah, Mr. Tiny, who hates to read, would give them books, FOR THERE PLEASURE, so they could learn about his evils, and have a splendid book!” Amy said sarcastically.

“Ya got a point there.” Audrey sadly replied back. She glumly walked ove to her books, and got out the sixth one. She walked back to amy.

“Okay, you give the book to it.” amy said.

“ARE YOU CRAZY! I know yur insane, but not crazy!”

“THIS IS NO TIME FOR JOKES! Its your book……”

“……but its your idea……..”

“And so you give it to him or her, or whatever.” amy said. Then said quietly, “I know you can do it.”

Audrey breathed in and out, then brought her book up, and the little person just pointed to the price. Audrey was trying to find the words that she could say. “Ummmmmm…….Hi. I know about you little people, and uh, I, well, I think you need this.”

Audrey extended her book to the little person. The eyes hidden by the hood, looked worried.

“no, its ok! I’m Audrey. Please, I know that Mr. Tiny demeans you, he is wrong. You need to know about your past!” Audrey begged. Something about the little person changed, and it hesitated and drew out its hand. Audrey placed the book, with her long fingers, and really pale skin, into the hand of the little person. It had stubby fingers, and grey skin. It looked at the book with wonder, then looked back up, almost if it was about to say something.

“Your welcome. And if you need any help, ask me, or my friend, Amy. Remember, never give up.”

Audrey walked away and left the little person dumbfounded. But heard the trumpets start and knew the show would come on soon. Amy patted her on the back, and they headed to their seats.

Turning Tables - Chapter 9

Audrey and Amy sat back down in there seats, for the show was about to start again. The lights dimmed, almost suddenly with no warning. People hurried back to there seats, some tripping.

Mr. Tall came on stage and it was all dark except for a single spotlight on him. Audrey put her hand in front of her face, but she could not see it. So everyone focused there eyes on Mr. Tall.

“Friends,” Mr. Tall said, “The nest act, you have to be dead silent. For if you make even a small noise, it could mean death for our performer, which means death for you. With that, here is our next act,” Mr. Tall lowered his voice to even a softer whisper than it was before, “Larten Crepsley and his Performing spider, Madam Octa.”

After he said that. The spotlight quickly went over to a table and then a man with a billowing red cape, as red as blood, stood there. He had a crop of orange hair, and he had a red and black outfit underneath. In his hand, he had a cage, which he set on the table. Audrey and Amy glanced over to each other; neither knew they looked at each other of course, because it was pitch black.

“Hello, my name is Larten Crepsley. Not all spiders can kill a man, or are poisonous. However, the one in this cage, is deathly poisonous. I have acquired Madam Octa awhile ago, and we have been business partners ever since.” A small hooded person, a little person, brought a bleating goat on stage. “Just to show you how poisonous she is, I have brought this goat.” He then pulled out a flute, although it was not a flute like in band. It was more of a recorder. Yet it sounded like flute. He then started playing a melody, and opened the cage. The melody was hypnotizing. Moreover, Madam Octa quickly heard it. She jumped onto the goat. Mr. Crepsley stopped, than did a short loud blow. Madam Octa sank her fangs into the goat.

“Now, she has only bitten him once. It is paralyzed. The poison will not kill the goat, but eventually it will die. Let us put the goat out of its pain.”

On that Cue from the flute, madam Octa bit down on the goat and it fell. Audrey brought her hand up to her mouth. She was shocked, and she loved this kind of stuff! Yet, still, she wanted to scream, but remembered that you had to be silent.

“Madam Octa can do more things than just kill goats, however.” Then, Mr. Crepsley blew into his flute and madam Octa, started dancing! She did a can can with her spider legs. Then she did flips and almost fell off. Many people in the front row stifled out a scream. Mr. Crepsley stopped playing for a split second to say, “Do not make a noise for it could mean death to you!” Then he started playing, and Mr. Tall stepped onstage. He took out a flute/recorder almost identical to Mr. crepsley’s, and started playing while madam Octa crawled over Mr. crepsley’s body.

She than began to spin a web over Mr. Crepsley’s mouth. Then madam Octa went down with a web still connecting it to his mouth. Mr. Crepsley threw his head up, and madam Octa let go. Audrey wondered if she would ever come down. Than, she landed on Mr. Crepsley’s head! Then he ate the spider web that was in his mouth. “Yum! Spider web is a treat from where I come from!” He said aloud, than took out his
Flute and Mr. Tall left. He played it, and madam Octa went back in her cage. As soon as he had finished he got up and left.

The curtain closed.

Turning Tables - Chapter 10

Most of the people started getting out of there seats to go out of the theater when a shrill woman’s scream was heard. Audrey and Amy turned their heads around sharply and saw a giant python curling out of the balcony. Most people who were at the back started running back to there seats, most just to get to the front. A few tripped while running and were slightly trampled as the stampeding began.

Then two eyes peeked out from the balcony, and a boy that had green scales and long yellow hair jumped down from the balcony and landed by the snake. He than said something that sounded across between a whisper and a hiss.

“Oh my god, its like Harry Potter.” Amy said. Audrey rolled her eyes, only amy could think about Harry Potter at a time like this!

The snake than turned to the boy and started slithering its way to meet him. The boy than spoke another whisper and put his head in the snake’s mouth! Audrey was surely it would swallow him whole, but it didn’t! Than he took his head out and said another whisper and the snake started curling around his body until it looked as if the boy wasn’t there and it was just the snake.

Than the snake came off and went around the audience and slithering up and down some aisles. Some women, even some men!, shrieked as the snake went past there feet. Then it went down Audrey and Amy’s aisle.

Audrey felt as the snakes cold scales went by her feet. It actually felt good! It kind of felt like cold water that ripples. Audrey smiled and thought it was silly that people were screaming. Amy didn’t screamed but she looked like at the first thing that would set her off, she would scream bloody murder.

The snake boy than called his snake boy with a shout instead of a whisper. The snake turned its head than looked at the boy and started crawling to him, over the audience’s head!

Screams were being yelled, and even some choice insults. The snake than returned to his master and the boy poked his tongue out, which was forked1 He than turned and walked behind the curtain.

Mr. Tall than came out after the screaming and cursing settled down. “And that, is really the end of the show.” He than disappeared off the stage as if he was never there.

Audrey and Amy sat there while most people were getting up and walking away. A faint cold breeze went past as they sat there. Their eyes were still glued upon the stage were the curtains were closed.

Audrey’s mind was still whirring from the events that just took place a few minutes ago. How could this happen? She asked herself. No matter how much she believed it was true before she came, she never was serious about it. That changed a lot of things, vampires and vampaneeze were real. And Desmond tiny was still at large!

“Are you ready for the tour?” Mr. Tall said appearing as if he had been there the whole time.

Audrey and Amy jumped in their seats. A tour? Audrey forgot about that, was it a good idea…..?

“Ummm…..Ok.” Amy said, slowly getting out of her seat. Audrey silently followed her
